I like what the says RE: wget and I'm inclined to agree that it's probably the most extensible/robust however I'd also assume without having gotten into the muck myself yet that it is not for the faint of heart and requires a good deal of familiarity and time invested up front to learn how to properly navigate and utilize the tool. I can plainly see what's been offered up as suggestions but I'd say this thread is a long, long way from any type of consensus or universally held /agreed upon solution.
